I watched Humphrey Bogart in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon many years ago.  I’m looking forward to it as the first read in The Big Read for the Nassau County Library system this quarter.

The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Nassau County Public Library System is an “initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, lasts from January 1 – March 31, 2010. "

The Big Read pamphlet describes The Maltese Falcon as “one of the best (detective stories) ever written.  It’s also a brilliant literary work, as well a thriller, a love story, and a dark, dry comedy. The only criticism one could offer Hammett’s private-eye classic is that it is so much fun to read, it might be hard the first time through to realize how deeply observed and morally serious it is.”

Also, according to the pamphlet, his third novel became the “standard by which all subsequent detective fiction would be judged.”  I really enjoyed the movie and, while I did not read the book, I plan on doing so.

2010 St. Marys River cleanup is March 20

CALLAHAN, Fla., March 2, 2010 — The 2010 St. Marys River Celebration, the annual spring cleaning of the river and its tributaries, will be held on Saturday, March 20, in Nassau and Baker counties in Florida and Camden and Charlton counties in Georgia.

The Celebration is a one-day volunteer cleanup of the St. Marys River.  Throughout the four-hour event, volunteers from four counties will scour the shorelines of the rivers, lakes and streams of the St. Marys River system, removing thousands of pounds of trash from the waterway.

The cleanup takes place from 8 a.m. until noon, followed by a celebration for volunteers until 2:30 p.m. at White Oak Plantation. A $5 donation is requested from volunteers to help defray the cost of the food. Tickets will be distributed to volunteers at their cleanup sites and are required to gain entry to White Oak. Gates to White Oak will open at noon.

Volunteers also will receive a St. Marys River Celebration T-shirt.

Approximately 1,028 volunteers participated in last year’s Celebration, removing more than 56,000 pounds of trash from the waterway and its banks.

Over the years, 8,500 St. Marys River Celebration volunteers have removed more than a half million pounds of trash from the river and tributaries.
