Chili Cook Off

The Corrections Division with the Nassau County Sheriff's Office knows a thing or two about
making chili. The staff competed in the “Amelia Island 4th Annual Chili Cook Off” on Saturday,
February 20, 2010.

Employees at the Nassau County Detention Center added their flavor and flair to the infamous
“Jailhouse Chili.” The spicy chili was a hit! The detention deputies and support staff placed 2nd
in the Best Chili Competition.

The Corrections Division also “brought the bars to those who tasted their concoction.” Some
employees dressed as inmates and served chili in a tent that looked like a jail cell. Their
creativity earned them 1st Place in the Best Cook Station (Tent Décor) Contest.

Nassau County Sheriff Sets Up Kiosk

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office is updating the way inmates at the detention center receive

money for their account. Funds can now be deposited into the new commissary kiosk, a machine
similar to an ATM.

Family members and friends no longer have to stand in a long line to deposit money into an
inmate’s account. Instead of cashier’s checks or money orders, they can bring cash or a credit or
debit card and instantly deposit money into an account.

With the new kiosk system, family members can also deposit money into an inmate’s account
online (inmatedeposits.com) or by phone (866-345-1884).

The Nassau County Detention Center also has another kiosk that allows inmates to get a debit
card, with the amount left in their account, when they are released from jail. Previously, a check
was mailed to them about a week later.

The kiosks will save time and help the facility be more eco-friendly. There are currently more
than 170 inmates housed in the detention center.
